When to Use List Difference

The list difference operation is the most common comparison task. Use it when you need to answer questions like:

  • Which records are missing? — Compare an expected list against an actual export to find gaps.
  • What was removed? — Compare yesterday's list with today's to find removed items.
  • Who didn't respond? — Compare a sent list against a response list to find non-responders.
  • Which IDs are unmatched? — Compare IDs from two systems to find records that didn't sync.

Need to find overlap instead? Try the intersection tool. Want to merge both lists into one? Use the merge tool. Coming from Excel? Read our guide on comparing lists without VLOOKUP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "list difference" mean?
List difference (also called set difference) finds items that exist in one list but not the other. A − B gives you everything in List A that is missing from List B. B − A gives you everything in List B that is missing from List A.
How do I find which items are missing from a list?
Paste your complete reference list into List A and the list you want to check into List B. Click A − B to see which items from your reference list are missing from List B. This is useful for finding missing records, unmatched IDs, or gaps in data exports.
Can I compare two columns from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Copy a column from Excel or Google Sheets and paste it directly into either panel. Each cell becomes one line. If your data is comma-separated, tab-delimited, or uses another separator, select the matching delimiter from the dropdown before comparing.
Is the comparison case-sensitive?
By default, no — "Apple" and "apple" are treated as the same item. If you need exact matching, turn on the "Case sensitive" toggle in the options bar before comparing.
